The Jubilee Street Party – moved into Ascension Church!
Tuesday June 5th was very wet indeed. The Lymore Street Party crew had been planning the event since the Royal Wedding the previous year….there was a children’s entertainer, a giant inflatable obstacle course, the band ‘The Mangled Worzels’, our choir, food, decorated cakes, face painting (and that’s just what I can remember….!)
In this rain, where would it all go?!
Less than 2 weeks before, on our vision weekend, we had ‘seen’ the opening out of our church building. We had dreamed of people coming in through the doors. One seven year old had even said church should have ‘a roller-coaster in it with God on the front.’!!
In the end we did open the whole church and hall and everything that was planned went ahead – including a large inflatable obstacle course down the middle of the church! The buzz was amazing, children and people everywhere – we couldn’t have planned it that way….!
One of the organizers wrote thanking the whole church, especially those that moved everything around, saying ‘It was such a relief as the reality would have been to cancel the event. Everybody seemed to have a lovely time and the extra space gave the children a sense of freedom’
Charities also benefitted through the profits of £345!
This was almost 3 times the amount that they made on the Royal Wedding day. They split it 3 ways with
£115 – towards the Queens charity the Pearson Trust for sending deprived children on holiday
£115 – towards the new cancer unit at the RUH
£115 – towards the British Heart Foundation.
So thanks to everyone who helped!
