Advent – the season of longing

During this time, please allow your heart to long for all that God alone can bring to us – as our season of prayer cards say, ‘The Hope of what is Yet to Come’. And I mean, bring him our deepest longings. We are here today to baptize into the family of Christ baby Primrose. Her parents and the rest of the family are glad for her life, and I would appeal to them to pray with faith in Christ for all that is yet to come for her. That she may find, with them, the way of Jesus Christ, the deepest and most amazing path to tread. We will hear Jesus call himself the ‘Son of Man’ today, probably his most often used name for himself. No-one really knows quite what he meant by using this name, but I sense how closely He was saying He identified with us all, all of us made in the image of His Father. And how all of us are also called to follow in His footsteps, for this is the way all of us can live in and discover God’s great love. In particular to go the way of service in love to those around us, just as Jesus did, saying, “Whoever wants to be great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first among you must become your slave. For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve others and to give his life as a ransom for many.”[1]
