Family feuds – Vicar’s weekly thought

Family feuds – a difficult one today!!

“Revenge is best served cold”, so they say. Just as well given the length of time people sometimes hold on to grudges and disagreements – and they may have even forgotten the original cause! Do we as Christians have any alternative to offer to such long term breakdowns in relationships, in families and elsewhere? Here are some lines by St Paul1 which may chart our course: ‘Never pay back evil with more evil’, ‘Dear friends, never take revenge. Leave that to the righteous anger of God’, ‘Instead, “If your enemies are hungry, feed them. If they are thirsty, give them something to drink.” ’; and perhaps in summary: ‘Don’t let evil conquer you, but conquer evil by doing good.’

One thing is certain, as Jesus said, “A town or family splintered by feuding will fall apart.”2 It is most likely all of us suffer from these ‘falling outs’ at some point in our lives, so none of us should crow! We hope and pray that today, you may see some of the first steps you may take in your own situations as you seek to at least offer some forgiveness, or kindness, whether it is returned or not. Our Lord Jesus Christ offered us many things we don’t deserve! As his disciples, in the power of the Holy Spirit, let us seek to reflect his character and, put simply, overcome evil with good. In God’s grace you never know what good may follow.
