When we are weak and afraid…..
Jesus says the strangest of things today. When teaching his disciples about the people and threats that will come against them he says, “Don’t be afraid…., for the time is coming when everything that is covered will be revealed, and all that is secret will be made known to all.” Jesus wants to make it clear to his disciples the truth that the most important thing is what He has put in their souls – not all the threats against them of which they might well be afraid! We also hear St John invite Christians to ‘live like Jesus in this world’ and so have confidence before God. The heart and soul of Jesus in this world was of course the love of His Father, the Father who gave up his Son’s very life for us. And John, with deep reflection, clearly says, ‘If we love each other, God lives in us, and his love is brought to full expression in us.’ In the face of the fears of our day, for us individually and as a society, by His Spirit let us once again seek to uncover God’s love, and to share it with others. Let us not stand back, but build again the Kingdom of God’s love, starting from our souls outwards. As the Psalmist put it today when facing his own fears, ‘My heart tells of your word, “Seek my face.” Your face, O Lord, will I seek.’
