It may take a while

Nicodemus had a huge encounter with Jesus, in the night yes, and not without a few struggles and misunderstandings on his part! But today we still here the amazing thing Jesus explained to him, “No one can enter the Kingdom of God without being born of water and the Spirit. Humans can reproduce only human life, but the Holy Spirit gives birth to spiritual life.”[1] Human beings need not just to be born and live, but to born of the Holy Spirit! Strangely, Jesus went on to say, “you can’t explain how people are born of the Spirit.” But whether or not we can say just how it happens, we need to ask God that it would happen – to us, that he would save us! Eternal life and the Holy Spirit were released freely to all who will have faith in Jesus Christ through the work of His Cross – the story of Easter. But here is a further encouragement – Nicodemus appears twice more in the story: sticking up for Jesus as the Temple authorities plan to do away with Him [2] , and helping Joseph of Arimathea (another secret disciple!) in burying Jesus after the Cross [3] . It seems it took Nicodemus really quite a while to warm up to the idea of whole-heartedly believing in Jesus! But surely, there came a point where he must have said “Yes” to faith in Jesus, and found the Holy Spirit bringing him to deep spiritual birth, as Jesus said it would.
